Ready for your next adventure? Discover these smart travel tips to save money on flights, lodging, food, and more, without sacrificing comfort, style, or fun. Make every dollar count on your journey. Learn more about these following budget Tips for the Savvy Explorer.
1. Search for Cheap Flights Like a Pro
Use budget flight search engines like Skyscanner, Kayak, and Google Flights. Turn on “incognito mode” on your browser so cookies don’t inflate flight prices. One of my favorite apps is Hopper—it alerts me when prices drop for flights I’m watching.
2. Travel During the Off-Season

Avoid traveling in July, August, or December. These are peak seasons and everything gets more expensive. Instead, try May or September—known as the shoulder season—for cheaper flights and hotels, plus pleasant weather in destinations like Europe or the U.S.
3. Skip Hotels: Embrace Affordable Alternatives

Hotels are often the most expensive option. Choose hostels, Airbnbs, or even Couchsurfing. My go-to is Booking.com, where I filter for hostels that offer free Wi-Fi, free breakfast, and are close to main attractions.
4. Use Public Transportation

Ditch the taxi. Use metros, buses, or simply walk! It saves money, helps you discover the city, and you’ll get your steps in. However, if you’re arriving late at night or in a city known for safety concerns, an airport taxi might be the safer bet.
5. Never Travel Without Travel Insurance
It’s more affordable than an emergency hospital bill abroad. U.S. hospital stays can cost thousands, but with insurance, you’re covered—including emergency flights home.
6. Shop at Local Supermarkets
Eating out every meal drains your wallet. Buy groceries and snacks nearby—especially if your Airbnb or hostel has a kitchen. I usually grab Greek yogurt, dark chocolate, fruits, and nuts for snacks, and plan for one nice restaurant meal per day.
7. Pack a Reusable Water Bottle
In countries with drinkable tap water (like the U.S. and most of Europe), refill your bottle and skip buying water. In other countries, use the hotel’s free purified water dispensers.
8. Buy a Local SIM Card
Avoid pricey roaming charges. Get a local SIM card with data and calls—it’s often much cheaper. Or rely on free Wi-Fi in hotels and cafes, and make calls through WhatsApp.
9. Save on Entertainment & Attractions
You don’t need to pay to go inside the Eiffel Tower every time — just take the iconic photo of the Tower from “Trocadéro Plaza” in Paris instead. Look up free museum days, public concerts, and walking tours where you tip what you want. Apps like Groupon or official city websites often offer discounts.
10. Take Advantage of Free Samples & Promos
Beauty stores often give free samples of lotions and perfumes—just ask! Some hotels provide coupons or free entry passes to attractions. Food courts and malls might also have free tastings.
11. Use a Portable Luggage Scale
My travel BFF. Weigh your bag before flights to avoid overweight fees. Saves money going and coming back.
12. Join Loyalty Programs (Even If You Don’t Travel Often
Most airlines and hotels have free loyalty memberships. Even if you travel once a year, you could earn points or unlock perks like free Wi-Fi, priority check-in, or discounts.
13. Fly Midweek or Off-Hours
Flights are typically cheapest on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, especially if you fly super early or very late. Less crowds, more savings!
14. Avoid Airport Currency Exchange Booths
They offer terrible rates. Instead, use local ATMs and select “charge in local currency.” Currency exchange apps like XE or cards like Revolut help track rates and avoid extra fees.
15. Eat Where Locals Eat
Skip the touristy spots with menus in 5 languages. Check Google Maps or Yelp for hidden gems locals love—cheaper and more delicious!
If you prefer to cook in your Airbnb, consider having a nice picnic outside. Take a look at this cute lunch bag:
16. Take Overnight Transport to Save on Accommodations
Overnight buses and trains help you save one night’s lodging. Just bring earplugs and a neck pillow, and you’re set.
17. Do Your Own Laundry
Pack a travel laundry kit: mini detergent, sink stopper, and a clothesline. This helps you travel lighter and avoid paying for laundry service.
18. Bring Multi-Purpose Items
Travel smarter with versatile items:
- Sarong (pillow, towel, scarf, picnic mat)
- Coconut oil (skin, hair, makeup remover)
- Ziplocks (for snacks, toiletries, electronics)
19. Travel With Friends or Join Small Group Tours
Split ride shares, meals, and accommodations with friends. Some tours offer group discounts or packages that are much more affordable when taken together.
20. Use Cashback & Promo Code Sites
Use Rakuten, Top Cashback or Join Honey to find travel discounts and apply coupon codes before you book anything online.
21. Follow Local Tourism Boards, Travel Influencers & Creators

Instagram, Youtube, and TikTok creators often share hidden deals, free events, or secret gems you won’t find in a guidebook. Even city tourism boards post up-to-date happenings.

22. Avoid Foreign ATM Fees
Use debit cards with no international ATM fees (like Charles Schwab or Revolut). And withdraw larger sums to avoid multiple charges.
